So, Welcome to our full review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.
Build and Design of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3
Xiaomi has undoubtedly taken a fresh approach to design the phone with construction of an all metal curved uni-body shell at this price. The new and improved design makes it easier to handle with a single hand but it is more difficult to grip for those with smaller hands.
The power and volume buttons positioned on the top right side of the phone offer exceptional feedback and responsiveness and don’t wobble even a little bit. The sides of Note 3 are rounded which make the phone fit better in the hands.
At the top you can see the audio jack, a noise cancellation mic and an infrared blaster as well. The IR Blaster on the top of the phone can be used to control anything from a TV to an air conditioner. The included Me Remote App is overall very nice and easy to use but it does lack support for some non Chinese products but you can download a third party app to regain support for virtually all other IR compatible products however.
Getting back to build, On the left you have the hybrid Sim card slots so you can either use two separate SIM cards or one Sim Card and one micro-SD card. You are able to use up to 128 gigs of storage.
At the bottom you’ll find the micro-USB data syncing and charging port and the primary microphone.
On the back it has those symmetric circles which are center aligned and they look absolutely perfect. The 16 megapixel camera sits there along with the dual tone LED Flash, fingerprint sensor and you have the speakerphone at the bottom. The back is again made of metal with plastic at the top and bottom for antenna coverage and the fingerprint sensor is absolutely swift. It’s very accurate and works as good as any flagship even if you put in the Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X in that race.
To the front you have a five megapixel camera, the multi-colored notification LED, proximity and light sensors and just below the display you have capacitive buttons which do light up. The front facing camera is not good enough but .
The display is a very sharp panel. It is color accurate and you can even tweak the color settings a little bit if you don’t like its natural reproduction. Moreover you have a reading mode available so it filters out the blue line and you can read the phone easily at night. Moreover It does have some kind of oleo-phobic coating as well so fingerprints can be easily wiped with just a clean cloth.
The 5.5 inch 1080p IPS display on the Redmi Note 3 looks good overall but it is lacking a bit in contrast and saturation in comparison to other phones. Its not incredibly noticeable on its own but there are definitely phones with better displays. The display sunlight readability, minimum brightness level and viewing angles are notably good. The adaptive brightness features works very well.
Packing support for Dual Band WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth 4.1, Redmi Note 3 offers the connectivity options you’d expect. MIUI 7 does not adapt Google voice mainly when Google voice Caller Id is turned on. This is because Google voice is a US product but it will be resolved after some time. Redmi Note 3 has a loud but distorted rear speaker. But it is blocked by a flat surface which is not a good sign.
The fingerprint reader on the back of the Redmi Note 3 is both fast and accurate. But it isn’t quite as fast as the on the Nexus 6P, the accuracy is just good. The 4000 mAh capacity of battery should be enough for many users. If battery life is important to you this phone will not disappoint.
Network and Call Quality
The call quality doesn’t have any issues. Network reception is great. it supports both Wi-Fi Bands as well which is again a great boon especially at this price point. Even GPS works great and you have that magnetic field sensor, gyroscope, pretty much everything that you can count on. So lots of sensors are available on this device.
Cameras in Redmi Note 3 (16 MP + 5 MP)
Smartphone photography has become a real thing and Redmi Note 3 doesn’t disappoint especially if you have good light outside. The Camera App found in MIUI has an easy-to-use auto experience while also offering many filters in addition to several camera modes. Manual mode gives you control over white balance and ISO and the other modes like panorama mode and timer mode can certainly be nice to have. You have manual exposure control too. You can just tap and control the exposure, you can take slow motion videos, capture time lapses as well and here’s the kicker – you can record 4K videos with this camera as well, although you would have to use the Google camera app.
The front facing 5 MP camera does a pretty decent job. Although images do turn out slightly noisy.
With a 16 megapixel rear camera and phase detection auto-focus the camera on Redmi Note 3 offers decent image quality. When there’s good amount of light it takes very good shots. Great effects due to the F2.0 lens and color reproduction is simply superb. Moreover, it captures quite a lot of detail because of that 16 megapixel sensor. Even HDR mode works great.
Solid dynamic range, you can distinguish between shadows and everything very easily but when you come indoors there’s quite a bit of noise introduced into the environment and images do become a bit hazy, it loses focus and details as well. But overall it is still a very good camera. Overall this camera does handle exposure in case of videos or even in photographs. But low-light performance is something that will disappoint you little bit.. But in this price range you will not find any smartphone better than Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.
Music and audio quality through the headset jack is really great and really sounds very good. Even the speakerphone is decently loud and doesn’t crackle at full volume. You can customize the sound profile according to your own headset that you have plugged in. You can also control it through an equalizer. In this phone FM Radio is supported with stereo FM recording. There are plenty of options when it comes to multimedia consumption. More over the 5.5 inch display does a great job while you’re watching local videos or on YouTube. Everything looks sharp and crisp.
Software is perhaps where Xiaomi has most injected value into the Redmi Note 3. Running MIUI 7.1 over the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, the Redmi Note 3 offers a heavily skinned android interface. Today according to the features at low price, MIUI is the best smartphone. Thanks to the mono customization and number of features it offers. Although many Android enthusiasts still prefer stock android, MIUI is definitely a worthy alternative. In MIUI7’s smooth animations, we are left with one of the best software experiences for under Rs. 15000. There’s plenty of features targeted at enthusiasts from launcher transition effects to weekly developer OTA updates. We didn’t notice any lag, Apps did open up quickly, You have MIUI customization like themes, you have notification shade right up top with the music player again right at the top.
Redmi Note 3 is still running on android 5.1 Lollipop and that is quite a bit behind when it comes to android updates and on 16 GB variant you’ll get about 10 GB when you get the device. It also supported USB OTG in which all Apps cannot be moved to the external SD card. You will provided with 700 MB RAM when all the running tasks have been cleared.
Special Feature Of MIUI7
You can hide folders and use your fingerprint to access them in MIUI7. All you need to do is check on hide and it won’t be available through any file Explorer. To undo, all you need to do is just swipe down from the top in the default MIUI file Explorer and you have access to it using your fingerprint. This is a great trick to hide your confidential documents or anything that you want to.
But still the fingerprint sensor is not that well baked into the entire OS like while adding Google accounts or any accounts you would still have to enter your pin and even the Lock Apps Option prompts you to add a pin and then a pattern instead of using the fingerprint sensor by default. Fingerprint integration still does need a little bit of work with MIUI.
Xiaomi at the launch event had said that you would get App Lock functionality and the ability to use the fingerprint sensor to capture selfies or take photos with the rear camera.
The launcher does not include an App Drawer, You can’t dismiss notifications from the Lock Screen and Google Apps don’t always play nicely when installed onto the Chinese ROM. Xiaomi hasn’t had the best track record for keeping their products updated to the latest versions of android, they do offer frequent MIUI updates that supplement many of the features found in newer versions of android.
Performance(Snapdragon 650 + Adreno 510)
In general this phone performs blazingly fast. MIUI 7 seems to run very smoothly with this hardware. Web browsing works great. There were no issues but yes every third or fourth App reloads including the launcher itself because there’s not a lot of free space available on the device and therefore RAM management has to be a bit aggressive but that doesn’t mean there is any lag on this device. As expected with 3 GB RAM, multi tasking shows no signs of slowdown while using the phone.
The gaming performance was also good while playing in performance mode. There is no lag, it performs brilliantly and more over doesn’t heat up with extended use. The maximum it reached was somewhere around 43°. In general, great game-play on the Redmi Note 3.
Battery Life (4050 mAH)
Battery life is simply stunning and you can get through 1 1/2 days of use easily with this device but the battery does take 3 hours to charge. Also it supports QUALCOMM quick-charge 1.o but still it is quite slow by today’s standards. You can use your smartphone without charging it a day with there 4050 mAh battery life. The massive 4050 mAh battery doesn’t make this phone hefty for some reason. It has a big screen of 5.5 inch for a better and great view.

The design and ergonomics on this device is just amazing, the fingerprint sensor works great and the camera does a pretty decent job as well. It’s a real value for money in this price segment. The phone excels in the key areas where its competitors do not. With its premium design, fast and accurate fingerprint reader and exceptional battery life the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is a commendable option, certainly worthy of consideration.
If you want to keep the device for more than several months, we definitely recommend the prime model or the 3 GB variant. You will get a massive 32 GB of internal storage memory. With the memory of 32 GB you can use both Sim cards without think about adding a micro-SD card. But if your budget is upto Rs 10000 then 2 GB RAM variant option is better.
